Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters
A recent study suggests that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing these treatments should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
