It has been 30 years after the first Toy Story film was released, establishing the animation giant as a leading animation studio and bringing audiences to iconic characters like Woody (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now famous worldwide.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans wondering how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Gang

In the teaser shows Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a latest toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the characters seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping prize toys locate loving owners.

Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is a little strange, however. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some aspects are continuing from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser displays the insignia attached to her shirt.

Hopefully she is still the key figure among the toys.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
